Peter Obi was absent at  former governor Rotimi Amaechi’s 60th birthday celebration in Abuja on 31st of May, 2025.

The birthday celebration which had prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-rufai, Abubakar Mallami; Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido and host of others in attendance, was not graced by Peter Obi.

Reliant.ng encountered on social media photos of Peter Obi and veteran Nigerian hip hop singer, Dbanj in Brentford during Super Eagles of Nigeria’s match against Jamaica. Peter Obi attended the match in solidarity with the Super Eagles of Nigeria who won Jamaica on penalties after 2:2 score at regulation time.

However, Reliant.ng confirms that Peter Obi who was duly invited to the birthday anniversary and was slated to speak alongside Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-rufai on the theme: “weaponization of poverty as a means of underdevelopment: case study of Nigeria”, did not deliberately avoid  the event but due to his engagement in the United Kingdom.

Peter Obi was a guest speaker at London Business School for an event organized by African Business Club. He attended the match at Brentford after speaking at the said event.

Peter Obi though did not attribute his absence at Rotimi Amaechi’s 60th birthday celebration to the event but did reveal through his X handle that he was a guest speaker at an event in London Business School.

His absence at  Rotimi Amaechi’s 60th birthday celebration sparked speculation about his relationship with the former Rivers state governor especially as the duo are the most prominent politicians of the Southern extract in the coalition talk.

Peter Obi who had congratulated Rotimi Amaechi through his social media accounts, is understood to have prioritize the event at London Business School over Amaechi’s birthday celebration in Abuja.

However, speculations in reaction to his absence at Rotimi Amaechi’s birthday celebration has it that the duo do not consider each other as ally. Some claim that they may have fallen out with each other following Obi’s reported refusal to forego his 2027 presidential ambition to become Atiku Abubakar’s running mate. Hence, Atiku Abubakar considers Amaechi as a veritable alternative to Peter Obi should he maintain his stance.

Rotimi Amaechi while speaking at his birthday anniversary, also referred to the coalition among the opposition figures. He enjoined the members of the coalition to put aside ethnic and religious factors for the interest of poor Nigerians who he said are hungry and need help.

The former governor declared his commitment to the coalition noting that if the members of the coalition are determined that they will win the presidential election at the expense of Tinubu. He added that he had rejected request by Tinubu for their alignment in 2023. According to him, Tinubu pleaded with him to support his presidential ambition in 2023 after the APC’s presidential primary election but he declined his request. He said he rejected the offer because he was doubtful of Tinubu’s capacity and competence and that he has been vindicated by the current state of the nation under Tinubu’s administration.
