Wike tackles Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa state

Former governor Nyesom Wike has described governor Duoye Diri’s resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as “very embarrassing”.

Nyesom Wike made the remark during his media chat on Friday, October 24th, 2025. In his response to a question about the political developments in the country, particularly PDP governors abandoning their political their party for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Nyesom Wike stated that he is not surprised that PDP governors are joining the APC. He reiterated his earlier stance on the current national leadership of the PDP. According to him, the current national leadership of the PDP are ignorant, self-centered and determined to destroy the party through their poor leadership.

Speaking particularly about governor Duoye Diri’s resignation from PDP, Nyesom Wike noted that the Bayelsa state governor was the chairman of the PDP committee on zoning of the party’s elective positions ahead of its slated November convention in Oyo state. He said Diri’s while occupying such an important position in the party and resigning his membership to the party, is demeaning to the party’s reputation and is a piece of evidence of how the party has lost its glory.

Nyesom Wike also stated the Bayelsa state governor was pretending as he was not committed to the PDP even before his resignation.  Wike said  Diri chairing the committee on zoning of elective position, was part of script against his interest in the party– a political game he was not oblivious of.

Though governor Duoye Diri resigned his membership to PDP on the 15th of October, 2025, about two weeks after, the governor is yet to announce his new political party.

Like his counterparts who recently left the PDP, governor Diri is linked to joining the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). According to speculations on social media, the governor is currently liaising with leadership of the APC in Bayelsa state and would announce his defection to the APC after reaching an agreement on power sharing with party’s leadership in Bayelsa state.

The group claims that they were manipulated and made to believe that the former Nigerian president who actually mean well for Nigeria, was behind insurgency in the region. According to them, Northern politicians and an unnamed former US president through his influence, deceived them into believing that Goodluck Jonathan, the then Nigeria president, was incompetent and behind the insurgency which is ravaging the region till date.

They stated that they have known the truth and realized how they were deceived to distrust the former president.

The group further enjoined Goodluck Ebele Jonathan not to turn his back on Nigeria due to the mistreatment he suffered from the northeast region in 2015. They also pleaded with the former president to consider running for the office of the president in 2027 based on the ground that he genuinely mean well for the northeast region and Nigeria at large.

This comes amid report of Goodluck Jonathan wanting to make a return to active politics after leaving office in 2015.

Reports say Goodluck Jonathan is considering joining the coalition party, African Democratic Congress (ADC) with the hope of being granted the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

Many Nigerians believe the former president has an unfinished business in Aso Rock and that the 2027 presidential election is the veritable opportunity for him to make a return to the presidential villa at the expense of his fellow southerner, president Bola Ahmed who in 2015, led a coalition of politicians into the All Progressive Congress (APC) to deny Goodluck Jonathan reelection.

Despite the reports of his interest in the 2027 presidential election, the former president is yet to issue any formal communication confirming or debunking the speculations.
