Why APC’s Governors Won’t Interfere In Fubara’s Impeachment–Gov. Abdullahi Sule
The governor of Nasarwa state, Abdullahi Sule has disclosed that the All Progressive Congress (APC) governors will not meddle in the ongoing impeachment proceeding against Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara who is a member of their party.
Governor Abdullahi Sule made the remark when he appeared on Channels Tv politics today on 29th of January. According to him, the members of the progressive governors’ forum are not overly concerned about governor Siminalayi Fubara facing impeachment.
He explained that impeachment of a governor involves processes and that the matter is currently in court whose outcome is expected to be in consonance with the Nigeria’s legal framework on such matters.
Governor Abdullahi Sule added that though such matter naturally attract emotional reactions, the process is grounded in rule of law and judicial scrutiny which ensures that decisions are made within the outlined legal framework. Hence, the reason the governors are not overly worried, allowing the process to go by the inevitable legal procedure. As a result, the governors incapable of interfering or halting the impeachment of their colleague, the Rivers state governor.
However, he pointed that in as much as the law must be followed, the members of the progressive governors’ forum are concerned about issues affecting one of them; however, their concern does not mean that they will take a stance against the rule of law by trying to halt the impeachment process. He explained that all the governors understand the importance of allowing the legal and constitutional institutions to handle such matters as stipulated by Nigeria’s constitution.
Recall that the River’s High Court on 16th of January, issued a restraining order to the Rivers state chief judge, Simeon Amadi, mandating him not to receive any communication from the Rivers state House of Assembly pertaining to governor Sim Fubara’s impeachment. The chief judge, Simeon Amadi was also mandated by the restraining order not to constitute a seven man panel to investigate governor Sim Fubara’s alleged infractions as requested by the Rivers state house of assembly.
The members of the Rivers state House of Assembly thereafter filed for an appeal at the appellate court, requesting that the court of appeal vacate the restraining order by the Rivers state High Court.
