Activist for good governance and convener of bring-back-our-girls, Aisha Yesufu has responded to report about Peter Obi agreeing to be Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2027.

Aisha Yesufu, a strong supporter of Peter Obi and member of the Obidient movement, took to her X handle to react to a publication by the Punch Newspaper which suggested that Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have reached an agreement over the 2027 presidential election.

According to the Punch Newspaper, Atiku Abubakar agreed to only go for a single tenure after which Peter Obi will take over in 2031.

While the leadership of the Obidient movement has debunked the report, Aisha Yesufu in her response insinuated that she will not support Peter Obi being Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2027.

The activist stated that the position of the vice president in the Nigeria political structure is irrelevant. According to her, why she voted for Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 was because of his running mate, professor Yemi Osibanjo who after his election as the vice president, became irrelevant. She said the position of is worst than a spare tyre.

She wrote: “The reason I voted for APC in 2015 was because of Prof Osibanjo. It still took me up to February before I finally came to terms with voting for Gen Buhari that I had said after 2011 riots is a NO NO! Gen Buhari is known to never work but delegate yet Osibanjo became a toothless collaborator”.

The activist further stated that same fate that befell professor Yemi Osibanjo who was overshadowed by the Buhari’s administration, will happen to Peter Obi if he emerges Atiku’s running mate.

She urged those clamoring for a coalition against the Tinubu’s administration to remember how the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) emerged through a coalition that is disinterested in providing governance to Nigerians.

” You have been parroting coalition is the way to go and that Peter Obi should be running mate to Atiku and you think you are the genius political strategist!”

“What did you think APC and Osinbajo being running mate was all about in 2014? With a Buhari that has antecedent of delegating and Osibanjo that even started campaign before Buhari?”She said

While Nigeria’s political atmosphere is charged for the 2027 general elections as political realignment has begun, the opposition parties’ figures are desperately grappling with disunity and lack of cohesion that will enable them unify their interest necessary for them to challenge president Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

While many expect the opposition parties to adopt a presidential candidate, the bone of contention is who becomes the coalition party flag bearer in 2027. Former Nigeria’s vice president, Atiku Abubakar is seeking to reunite with his 2019 running mate but many of Peter Obi’s staunch supporters are against such a reunion. They believe that Peter Obi who recorded more than six million votes in the 2023 presidential election as the Labour Party candidate, has political grown above being a running mate to another candidate. Hence, the Obidient movement leadership had declared that any coalition that the group will be part of, must make their principal, Peter Obi its presidential candidate.
