Peter Obi should not contest in 2027– Ohanaeze warns, gives reason

Peter Obi has been warned by a faction of the Ohanaeze socio-cultural group over his 2027 presidential ambition.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the deputy president general of a faction of Ohanaeze in a statement he released on the 23rd of July, 2025, warned that the Southeast of the Nigeria’s federation stands to lose so much in the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration if Peter Obi dares to contest against president Tinubu in 2027.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro pointed out that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been very beneficial to the Southeast. According to him, the Tinubu’s administration has not only given prominent Igbo sons and daughters such as former governor Dave Umahi and Bianca Ojukwu opportunities to serve as important members of his cabinet but currently rebuilding the Southeast road infrastructure through Dave Umahi who is the minister for works.

He explained that Peter Obi’s presidential ambition as well as his ambiguous conspiracy against president Tinubu with Atiku Abubakar stands to harm the Southeast interest similar to what happened in 2019 when Atiku Abubakar contested against president Muhammadu Buhari with Peter Obi as his running mate. He added that Peter Obi accepting to be Atiku’s vice in 2019 truncated Buhari’s good plans for the Southeast who thereafter abandoned the region because of their lack of political support and their preference for Atiku Abubakar over him.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro further stated that though the Southeast is the political fortress of Mr. Peter Obi but that the region alone is incapable of making him the president of the whole country through democratic process. Hence, he noted that Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition is inimical to the Ndigbo and that he should forgo such an ambition in the interest of the Ndigbo. He said Peter Obi should rather be concerned about negotiating with the Tinubu’s administration to secure the interest of the Ndigbo.

He however stated that Peter Obi has the constitutional right to contest for Nigeria’s president especially with the backing of his organic supporters but that he is likely to be betrayed by people he trust and placed around him. He said the betrayal will result in his defeat and triumphant of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu which in that context, will not be good for the Ndigbo.

He advised Peter Obi to learn from his 2019 political sojourn with Atiku Abubakar which ended in Muhammadu Buhari’s victory and resulted in the president’s disinterest in the Ndigbo.

He also pointed out that the ongoing legislation by the National Assembly on the creation of Anioma state to bring the number of states in the southeast region to six, equal with other regions, is evidence of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s love for the South east region and the need for the region to support him.
