Bello El-rufai has tendered unreserved apology to former president Goodluck Jonathan over his “naivety” and stance against the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

In a surprising tone, the member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal constituency recounted how his recent political exposure and developments in the Nigeria’s political space have made him regret his actions against the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

According to Bello El-rufai, his recent experience with his father, Nasir El-rufai made him regret about the manner he was critical of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration.

He said he was with his father recently as he made preparations to go out. When he sought to know where his father, Nasir El-rufai was going to, his father informed him that he was going to visit former president Goodluck Jonathan for discussion over Nigeria’s political future. He stated that he pleaded with his father to inform the former president that he is “sorry” to have naively criticized his administration including thinking and saying that he was the most incompetent Nigerian president.

According to Bello El-rufai, his perception about the former president has changed as he has realized that the former president was not all he thought he was and represented.

He went further by stating that the “system” is the problem especially in Africa. He praised the former president for his courage, his deep uncompromising love for Nigeria which culminated in his accepting defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

He said Goodluck Jonathan’s rare quality distinguishes him as most of African leaders would not concede defeat in an election they supervised and whose results did not favour them.

Speaking further, Bello El-rufai noted that Nigeria’s current electoral system is flawed and highly vulnerable to manipulation by those in power. He said the system must be further modified to ensure mandatory electronic transmission of elections from the polling units. He said this modification is necessary for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to regain the confidence and trust of the electorates.

Reacting to the now withdrawn bill which sought to penalize eligible voters who failed to vote in an election, Bello El-rufai stated that he would have voted against such a bill if it were brought for voting by the members of the House of Representatives. He described the bill as undemocratic and draconian.
