
Nigerian Nollywood movie producer, Anaele Ugochukwu Dominic has released a satirical movie which mirrors the social activism of Martins Vincent Otse widely known as Verydarkblackman and in short: VDM
The movie which is also titled Verydarkblackman features veteran actor, Gentle Jack who played the role of the activist, portraying his outspokenness, fearlessness, and advocacy for social change.
Martins Vincent Otse came into public limelight in year 2022 through his viral criticism of some skincare products. His viral criticism of the products, triggered the Nigeria’s National Agency for Food And Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) who acted in response to the various concerns expressed by Verydarkblackman.
The now popular activist, was also actively involved in the call for justice for deceased Nigerian hip hop singer, Mohbad. Verydarkblackman’s call for investigation into the controversial death of Mohbad amounted to relevant Nigerian authorities who had neglected the case to take actions. The remains of the singer which had been buried for seven days, were thereafter exhumed for postmortem while suspects linked to his death were arrested.
Subsequently, Verydarkblackman became a household name, synonymous with social justice and integrity. Through his charity funds, the activist renovated many primary schools across the country.
Hence, the movie: Verydarkblackman by Anaele Ugochukwu Dominic aims to showcase the commendable efforts of Martins Vincent Otse who emerged from a very poor background to become a voice for the voiceless.
The movie hugely uses humour didactically portray the social activism of Martins Vincent Otse’s dedication to his social activism even in the face of resistance.
Reactions from Nigerians to the movie on social media is a mixture of sarcasm and commendation. While some sees the movie as a means of recognizing Verydarkblackman and encouraging him for his dedication and initiatives, some scorned at the movie for being inept and lacking interesting storyline
