Nasir El-rufai Reacts To Sharia Council Call For INEC Chair Sack

Former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai has seemingly thrown his weight behind the leadership of Supreme Council for Islamic Judicial Affair in Nigeria on its agitation for the removal of professor Joash Amupitan as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Judicial Affair, Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar has repeatedly demanded that professor Joash Amupitan be sacked as INEC chairman due to his alleged legal brief in 2020 in which he claimed that christians in Nigeria are facing genócidal by islamists and also called for foreign intervention to safeguard christians whom he said were being persecuted by Jihadists.

Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar as a result, accuses professor Joash Amupitan of religious bigotry and partiality, claiming that he cannot be trusted with conducting Nigeria’s general elections in 2027. He added that the Supreme Council for Islamic Judicial Affair will not accept the outcome of any election conducted by professor Joash Amupitan due to his stance on christian genócide in Nigeria.

Former governor Nasir El-rufai seemingly showed support for Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar’s agitation for professor Joash Amupitan sack by reposting through his X (Twitter) account, a post about Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar’s demand for professor Joash Amupitan’s removal.

Even though the former Kaduna state governor merely reposted the post about Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar’s call for professor Joash Amupitan’s sack as INEC chairman, social media commentators believe that Nasir El-rufai by reposting the tweet, is in solidarity with the Supreme Council for Islamic Judicial Affair and Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar.

Political commentators have described the agitation by the Sharia Council for professor Joash Amupitan’s removal as having political undertone rather than a true call for transparency or question of integrity.

This development appears to have sectionalized Nigeria across religious lines– while the Sharia Council demands professor Joash Amupitan’s resignation or sack, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) opposes the call for professor Joash Amupitan’s removal.
