Peter Obi and former governor Nasir El-rufai meeting yesterday has been linked to former vice president Atiku Abubakar and his stance over the African Democratic Congress (ADC) political future.

A trusted source privy to the details of Peter Obi and Nasir El-rufai meeting yesterday, 25th of July, 2025, stated that Nasir El-rufai sought to meet Peter Obi over the growing poor relationship between Atiku Abubakar’s supporters and Peter Obi’s supporters as well as Atiku’s desperate moves.

Peter Obi and Atiku’s supporters have been trading words online and offline over the ADC 2027 presidential ticket.

Reliant.ng understands that Peter Obi and Nasir El-rufai met after he left Cross River state where he visited the University of Calabar and made 20 million naira donation to the university’s dentistry department. He arrived Abuja later in the day where he met delegates from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who met him to seek his return to the PDP to become the party’s 2027 presidential candidate.

Peter Obi also met with his 2023 running mate, Baba-Ahmed Datti who according to an aide to Peter Obi, briefed him about his reconciliatory effort in the Labour Party (LP) and the demands of the factional chairman of the party, Abure.

Lastly, Peter Obi concluded his busy day with a meeting with Nasir El-rufai. According to a source who prefers not to be named, Peter Obi and Nasir El-rufai’s meeting centred on the distasteful relationship between his supporters and those of Atiku Abubakar as well as the clandestine moves by Atiku Abubakar to position himself as the presidential candidate of the ADC in 2027.

Nasir El-rufai requested that Peter Obi calms his supporters who perceive Atiku Abubakar as the only stumbling block to Peter Obi emerging the coalition party presidential candidate in 2027. He advised that the opposition must focus on the underperforming administration of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu rather than yield to infighting at this critical stage of the coalition party.

The source said: ” Nasir El-rufai is not happy with Atiku Abubakar. He believes he is making the coalition all about himself. Nasir El-rufai who believes in power rotation between the South and the North also believes that power should remain with the south in 2027 to equal president Muhammadu Buhari’s two tenures”.

“Atiku is paying for ADC offices and having his banners all over them. He believes the ADC is all about him and his presidential ambition. He also wants Obi to accept to be his running mate which is unlikely”.

The source also revealed that Nasir El-rufai fancies Peter Obi and prefers him to become the ADC’s presidential candidate over Atiku Abubakar. According to the source, Nasir El-rufai feels disgruntled by Atiku Abubakar’s desperate move in the ADC which he aims to cripple his fellow presidential aspirants and compel Obi to become his running mate.

The source added that some northern power brokers which Nasir El-rufai is among, are planning on reaching out to Atiku Abubakar to convince him to allow the ADC presidential ticket to go to the Southern part of the Federation and particularly, the Southeast.

Nasir El-rufai is said also to be positioning himself for the vice presidential role irrespective of his distasteful remarks about Peter Obi in the past.

Hence, the power brokers believe that Peter Obi and Nasir El-rufai presidential ticket will be widely accepted across the country as well as defeat president Tinubu in 2027.

Also, the former governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal who has good relationship with Peter Obi, is also being considered by the northern power brokers for the vice presidential role.

Speaking after making 20 million naira donation to the dentistry department of the University of Calabar, Peter Obi reiterated his earlier stance on the 2027 presidential election. He assured his supporters that he will contest.
