In another celebrity news, Nigerian hip hop singer, Oludipe Oluwasanmi David widely known as Spyro has shared insight into the pressure he faced in the Nigerian music industry due to his Christian faith.
The singer through his social media account, recounted how his Christian faith was seen by his allies in the Nigeria’s music industry as a defect to his music career progression.
According to him, in 2019 when he severed ties with his former record label, he was optimistic about his music career especially his potential to break into the Nigeria’s music industry independently. He however faced challenge with finances as he had no one funding his music project nor giving him a platform to thrive. He sought loans from banks to finance his music projects while believing in Jesus Christ for success.
Due to his unwavering faith in Christ which is evident in his social media profiles where he identified himself as “Jesus Boy”, he was advised by his peers and collaborators in the music industry to remove “Jesus Boy” from his profile.
According to him, his advisers claimed that he was unlikely going to thrive in the music industry by projecting himself as a religious, Christ-believing singer.
He said while the pressure was being mounted on him, he saw it as test of his faith in Christ and resolved that he would never remove “Jesus Boy” from his profile nor change it to “child of God” as he was advised by his friends who believed that “Child of God” has a broader meaning and would be more acceptable than “Jesus Boy”.
Spyro explained that his response to his advisers is that he would rather die than remove or edit “Jesus Boy” on his profile.
He added that those who doubted how he would make it in the music industry while upholding his Christian faith now feel awed by the level of success he has attained without compromising on his Christian faith.
He said while his fellow hip hop artists lament over their music career, he excels.
Recall that Spyro had previously disclosed how difficult it was for him to succeed in the music industry as a Christian. The singer while speaking in an interview, narrated how singer, Banky W encouraged him in the early stage of his career. He said Banky W told him to uphold his faith in God in the face of the unending pressure in the music industry for him to compromise his belief in God.
