Reliant.ng has learnt from leading online Nigerian newspaper, Sahara Reporters that the Nigeria’s senate leadership was plunged into altercation today, 24th of July, 2025.

The altercation involved two prominent members of the Senate who are loyal to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and occupying the two highest positions in the current senate. According to the report, senate president Godswill Akpabio and the Senate majority leader, senator Bamidele Opeyemi were involved in an altercation during their closed door session; exchange of words almost  degenerated to physical brawl if not for the intervention of other senator

According to the report, the altercation resulted from senator Bamidele Opeyemi’s displeasure with senate president Godswill Akpabio at his manner of leadership. He openly expressed his dissatisfaction with senate president Godswill Akpabio in support of the point made previously by senator Ali Ndume who questioned senate president Akpabio failure to respectively and duly carry the members of the Senate along especial on the matter of their two-month recess.

Senator Ali Ndume criticized senate president Godswill Akpabio for his sudden announcement of the intention of the Senate leadership to adjourn the senate legislative sitting for the week or that of the next in respect to the senate annual two-month recess. Senator Ali Ndume in his remark, pointed out that the senate leadership should have before that time informed the members of the Senate especially its executive members necessary for them to have collective resolution.

While supporting senator Ali Ndume’s point, the senate majority leader, Bamidele Opeyemi accused senate president Godswill Akpabio of being autocratic, domineering, and disdainful to the members of the Senate executive. He noted that Akpabio imposes his interest on the senate without due consultation with the members of the Senate executive. He threatened to resign his position as the senate majority leader if senate president Akpabio will continue to show lack of respect and regard for the members of the Senate executive as himself.

In his response to senate Bamidele Opeyemi’s outburst, senate president Godswill Akpabio ordered him to “sit down” and show respect to his position. He boasted that his political experience and service as a two-time commissioner, a governor, and a “powerful minister” ensured that he is vast with the Senate rules.

However, no formal communication has been made regarding the surprising development by the senate nor the senators who were close to physical confrontation but for the intervention of the other senators.
