Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, Datti Baba Ahmed has expressed his reservations and concerns about coalition of opposition politicians on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Datti Baba Ahmed who still claims that himself and Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election at the expense of former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warned that the ADC might fail to defeat president Tinubu in 2027 due to the untamed ambitions of the members of the coalition.
Datti Baba Ahmed had previously in his reaction to the launching of the coalition which he participated in, expressed doubt over the coalition party giving its presidential ticket to Peter Obi. He stated that Peter Obi deserves the party’s presidential ticket instead of being considered for the vice presidential position.
Hence, the former senator reiterates that the members of the coalition might fail in their conspiracy against president Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to many of the prominent members of the coalition nursing presidential ambition and unlikely to make sacrifices.
Datti Baba Ahmed explained that none of the ADC presidential aspirants posseses the unique trait of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu whom he said showed endurance and patience by his political calculations. He pointed out how president Bola Ahmed in 2007 sacrificed his presidential ambition for Atiku Abubakar and also did same for president Muhammadu Buhari in 2014. According to Datti Baba Ahmed, none of the presidential aspirants in the ADC will likely make such a sacrifice by placing the party’s destiny over his presidential ambition.
Datti Baba Ahmed’s statement comes in the face of the growing concerns in the camp of Peter Obi supporters known as the Obidient movement. The members of the Obidient movement have warned that they are likely to pull out of the coalition should their principal, Peter Obi be denied the coalition party, ADC’s presidential ticket.
Popular blogger and social media influencer, Tunde Ednut who is an ardent supporter of Mr. Peter Obi is championing an agitation on social media for the ADC to give its presidential ticket to Mr. Peter Obi as a condition for the Obidient movement to remain part of the coalition. The members of the Obidient movement fear that Peter Obi might not match the financial strength of the likes of former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former governor Rotimi Amaechi in buying of the party’s delegates’ votes during the ADC presidential primary election. According to them, Atiku Abubakar had in the past demonstrated that he can not be matched in buying of delegates votes during primary elections.
Hence, the Obidient movement have adopted hashtag #PeterObiornothing to drive home their agitation.
While the coalition still faces the puzzle over its 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi had submitted a one-tenure proposal to the coalition party. Peter Obi in his proposal, promised to govern for a single tenure necessary to complete the remaining single tenure for the Southern Nigeria in the unwritten zoning pattern of the federation.
A day after Peter Obi submitted his single tenure proposal to the coalition party, former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi also made similar remark about his presidential ambition. He vowed to rule only for four years if the ADC gives him its presidential ticket for 2027 general elections.
