Peter Obi visited the office of Nigeria’s former attorney general of the federation and minister of justice under the Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration, Abubakar Malami.
The meeting of the duo was made public by the national leader of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko through his X handle on 25th of June, 2025.
Yunusa Tanko described the meeting of the two as a mark of Abubukar Mallami becoming one of the high profile figures in the country who has joined Peter Obi’s supporter’s group known as the Obidient movement. He added that the meeting also shows the Obidient movement commitment towards bridge building across the country as well as effort towards defeating president Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Speculations have it that the former attorney general of the federation is leading the coalition party strategic operations and also nursing a governorship ambition in 2027. Abubakar Malami is also speculated to have considered Peter Obi as the most suitable candidate to challenge Tinubu in 2027. Sources claim that he is among those pushing for the coalition to adopt Peter Obi as its 2027 presidential candidate at the expense of former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
The leadership of the Obidient movement had resisted the idea of Peter Obi becoming a running mate to any other candidate. They pointed out that Obi’s political movement and ideas resonate with the majority of Nigerians desirous of positive change in the country and as such, he would become a deputy to any other politician.
Peter Obi who was Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate has become a symbol of hope and new Nigeria for the vast majority of the Nigerian youths. As a result, he is believed by many to be the ideal presidential material that would necessitate the economic and political emancipation the Nigeria youths desperately clamour for.
While he has disclosed that he would contest the 2027 presidential election against the incumbent president Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose presidential victory in 2023 is perceived controversial by many, the platform through which Peter Obi will contest in 2027 still remains uncertain amid coalition talks and the internal crisis of the Labour Party (LP).
While the majority of the prominent opposition parties in Nigeria are currently grappling with internal leadership crisis, there are ongoing talks by opposition parties’ figures to form a coalition party that will challenge president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Former Nigeria vice president Atiku Abubakar, former governor Nasir El-rufai, former governor Rotimi Amaechi, former governor Rauf Aregbesola, former governor Peter Obi and host of others are publicly known as those leading the coalition conspiracy against Tinubu.
While the coalition party is yet to be unveiled, deciding the presidential candidate of the coalition party is said to be a herculean task capable of derailing the collective ambition of the coalition party especially as the major stakeholders seem to positioning themselves as the face of the coalition and inadvertently, the potential presidential candidate of the coalition party.
However, speculations have it that the coalition will likely present presidential ticket which features Peter Obi as either its presidential candidate or vice presidential candidate.
